Welcome to
Rottweiler Central
The Rottweiler is often a misunderstood and much maligned breed of dog. Rottweilers are imposing because of their large overall size and huge head and muzzle; but they make the case for never judging a book by its cover. Rottweilers are gentle, loving dogs that make wonderful household companions.
The Rottweiler is an ancient breed of dog, as their history dates back at least 2000 years. Rottweilers were originally huge Tibetan mastiff-type dogs that were used by Roman armies to haul supply carts and guard the army camps. These enormous dogs were strong enough to cross over mountains and pull carts over difficult terrain.
The predecessor of the Rottweiler was brought to Germany by the conquering Roman army. As the giant dogs mixed with local herding dogs, the breed slowly evolved to the dog we know today. Over time, the Rottweiler was bred for their sturdiness, strength, and protective instincts. These characteristics were ideal for hauling, and with the influx of the herding dog characteristics, the Rottweiler became an ideal dog for use with herding cattle. Gradual breeding changes resulted in today’s Rottweiler.
Among people who are unfamiliar with the Rottweiler breed there is the mistaken impression that Rottweilers are difficult, temperamental, and fierce. In part, the Rottweiler gives an imposing impression, due to his large size and protective nature. But the ideal Rottweiler is actually an extremely calm, courageous, and confident dog.
The Rottweiler is not like some breeds that immediately latch onto new
people and immediately make friends. Rottweilers have a watchful attitude about what is going on in their environment, and they only react when provoked. They are extremely protective dogs – they instinctively protect their homes and the family members in the home.
One thing I would say is, that whether you already own a Rottie or thinking of getting one, you should have a read of the highly recommended Rottweiler Manual. There you will learn all about how to keep your dog happy, healthy and well behaved!
